Notice your head starts pounding right when work gets crazy? That's not a coincidence, and it's not "just stress" either. There's real, physical stuff happening in your body, and the good news is most of it is very fixable.

Does Stress Actually Cause Headaches?‍

Short answer: yes, but not quite the way you'd think. Stress doesn't create a headache out of thin air - it tightens up your neck, shoulders, and jaw without you even noticing, and it wrecks your sleep. That tension and poor sleep are what actually trigger the headache. Stress is the match; muscle tension is the fire.

That's why two headache types show up so often:

  • Tension headaches - that tight band feeling around the head, from tight neck and shoulder muscles
  • Cervicogenic headaches - headaches that actually start in your neck (stiff joints, tight muscles) and refer pain up into your head

If you're already carrying tightness from work - hunched over a desk or grinding through a physical job - stress is what tips it over into a full-on headache.

A Practical Guide to Shutting It Down

1. Move every 30 minutes. Whether you're at a desk or on the tools, your neck needs regular breaks from whatever position it's stuck in. Set a timer if you have to.

2. Catch yourself clenching. Jaw tight? Shoulders up near your ears? That's stress showing up physically. Just noticing it and consciously dropping your shoulders a few times a day makes a real difference.

3. Do this neck stretch daily. Gently tilt your ear toward your shoulder, hold for 20 seconds, then switch sides. Takes 60 seconds, undoes a lot of the day's damage.

4. Protect your sleep. Poor sleep and headaches feed each other in a nasty loop. Even small improvements here - consistent bedtime, less screen time right before bed - pay off.

5. Get water in you. Dehydration is a sneaky headache trigger that's genuinely that easy to fix.

6. Get your neck actually checked. This is the piece most people skip. If there's joint restriction or muscle tightness already sitting in your neck, stress will keep finding it and setting it off - stretches and better sleep will only get you so far.

Where does Chiropractic Come in?‍

We assess your neck and upper back to find what's actually restricted, then use hands-on adjustment and soft-tissue work to free it up - which has solid evidence for cervicogenic-type headaches, especially. We'll also give you specific exercises, so you're not relying on appointments alone to keep it in check.

The Bottom Line‍

Stress and headaches feed off each other, and the neck is usually where it plays out. Fix the daily habits above, and let's sort out what's actually tight and restricted - so you stop getting hit every time work gets busy.

This blog is general information and isn't a substitute for individual assessment. If you're getting frequent or worsening headaches, you should see a health professional for a proper assessment.
